Is PAT testing a legal requirement?
PAT testing isn't named in legislation, but the Electricity at Work Regs 1989 require portable equipment to be maintained safely. PAT testing is the standard accepted way to demonstrate that. Most commercial insurers and lease agreements require it explicitly.
How often should PAT testing be done?
Risk-based: office Class II equipment annually is the IET guidance default. High-use environments (construction, kitchens, schools) every 6 months. Low-risk Class II portable appliances in low-occupancy offices can stretch to 2 years.
Can you test in a working office without disruption?
Yes — we work zone-by-zone, average 3–5 minutes per appliance, and only one workstation is offline at a time. For larger sites we schedule out-of-hours.
